Most people know that every driver in Tennessee is required by Tennessee law to have automobile liability insurance at minimum limits. But did you ever wonder why Tennessee requires everyone to maintain a liability insurance policy?

The National Center for Statistics and Analysis (“NCSA”) estimates that there were 6,328,000 police reported traffic crashes in the United States in 2003, with 2,889,000 people injured as a result of these motor vehicle collisions. In fact, motor vehicle crashes are the leading cause of death for individuals between the ages of 4 and 34. In 2003, the NCSA estimates that an average of 117 individuals died each day in a motor vehicle collision – one every 12 minutes.

These statistics are staggering. The annual cost for motor vehicle collisions is approximately One Hundred and Thirty Seven Billion Dollars ($137,000,000,000). Based on these numbers, in 2003, the average cost per accident was over Twenty Thousand Dollars ($20,000.00).

These statistics are the precise reason why the State of Tennessee requires all drivers to maintain automobile insurance coverage. The purpose of automobile insurance is to insure that you, your passengers, and your property are protected in the unfortunate event that you are involved in an accident.

So what happens if you are involved in a vehicle collision and the collision was not your fault? Statistics show that a high percentage of automobile collisions are caused by the negligence of at least one driver. Negligence, in legal terms, is the failure to use reasonable care. This issue is where your rights need to be protected.
